Imagine this emblem, waaaaaay at the end of that big hood. That chrome dollop was the hallmark of class.
Or walk to the rear of the car, Yep, more chrome. Slip aside the emblem, stick in the key. Lo! A trunk that would hold a double bed.
Stroll back to the front end. Make sure your sunglasses are on. Behind all that chrome: a state-of-the-art V8 — most likely the “nailhead.” They were new that year.
That year: 1953, when the Buick Special hit the highways. Big., heavy, shiny, it epitomized the land yachts of six-plus decades ago. This yacht is dry-docked in Bluffton, S.C., 260 miles southeast of Atlanta. (Photos by Senior Junkyard Correspondent Harold “Tex” Colson)
