A new decade! America’s auto makers scrambled to make something to match the change. The style gurus at GM reached for a tried-and-true feature: chrome. How about a jet, permanently affixed to the rear fender? And how about some individual taillights? The previous year’s model hadn’t had anything that revolutionary. And thus did the 1960 Chevrolet Bel Air bow to the American public. This model was the last year that would feature fins, a reminder of the behemoths from the 1950s. This Chevrolet harkens to an earlier time on a highway near Bluffton, S.C., 260 miles southeast of Atlanta. (Overdue photos by Senior Junkyard Correspondent Harold “Tex” Colson)
